A Fruit or a Root Day?
Now I read in magazine recently an interesting article with the strange thought about biodynamics.
Now for those of you who have not heard of this before I should explain that biodynamics in wine making is the concept that different wines are produced depending on when the grapes were planted & harvested in regard to the lunar calendar. Apparently wines taste different depending on when these tasks were undertaken.
Of course as you can imagine studies taken so far have been inconsistent and inconclusive but believers will not be swayed and some wine producers are looking to biodynamics in the vineyards.
A according to this article in the Decanter magazine a certain Maria Thun says that the reason wines taste different to us on different days is all to do with whether its a fruit or a root day.
Red wines are more affected than whites because of the tannins so be aware of which days are fruit days and which are root and try to avoid red on the root days.
Maria Thun says that red wine is harsher on the root day and the whites are more expressive on the fruit day. According to Christelle Guibert who tastes and reviews wine for a living, when doing the experiment she had to agree! Even Jamie Goode believes that the concept shouldn’t be dismissed out of hand.
Producers of biodynamic food need a Demeter certificate – a DEFRA-approved scheme – with which they commit to farm organically, encourage biodiversity, trade fairly, take a holistic approach – and keep an all-important eye on the moon's movements.
