Veuve Clicquot house was founded in 1798 by Philippe Clicquot-Muiron who died only 7 years later leaving his widow to run the business. Madam Clicquot ran the house very exceptionally well and the house soon became known as Veuve (widow) Clicquot.
La Grande Dame was named for Nicole-Barbe (the widow) to commemorate the company's bicentenary.
