Baked Alaska is a an all time favourite. Attributed to many people as the inventor of this gorgeous pudding it is generally accepted that the famous chef Charles Ranhofer of Delmonico's created what is now the modern baked alaska that we know and enjoy.
This dessert was created in 1867 to celebrate the purchase of the state Alaska from Russia & named it Baked Alaska.
Originally the purchase of Alaska was thought to be a folly due to the opinion that the land was simply a wasteland of ice and snow. It is now known to be the very opposite, it is a land that is one of the richest and most beautiful in the world.
Ingredients
1 Plain sponge cake
6 Egg whites
6 tblespn icing sugar
2 block of vanilla ice cream
1/4 tspn vanilla flavour
To make the meringue beat the egg whites until stiff, add sugar gradually while beating constantly, add vanilla.
On a board, lay a sponge cake, place the icream on top of the sponge cake and cover the merigue all over the ice cream nice and thickly. Put in the fridge for a while to really get the merigue cold, the coldness of the merigue and the plate/board the cake is standing on will trap protect the ice cream from the heat of the oven whilst cooking.
When the oven is really hot, put the whole cake structure into the oven and bake unti the merigue is golden.
Serve immediately.
