Sloe Gin
There are lots of recipes for sloe gin and most will have various amounts of sugar added but this is one that I had from my father and tried out. It was successful and I have to add that papa loved it!
You need:
Sloes approx 12 - 16ozs Sugar - approx 6 - 8 ozs Gin A bottle with a neck large enough for sloes to be pushed through.
Pick sloes in autumn. Prick each sloe a few times to release the flavours, this sounds tedious but actually its not that bad. I have heard of someone who rolled a grater over them, so you could try that if you feel lazy. Fill your bottle 1/3 full of sloes Add sugar and gin
When I did this I added some sugar then some gin then a bit more sugar and then more gin until the bottle was filled so depending on the size of the bottle depends on if you can add it all. If you use a demijon you will be able to add all of it but I used a second empty gin bottle and found I had put a little less sugar in it. Sloe gin making does not have to be an exact science.
Leave somewhere in a cupboard, shake/turn gentle every of day for a couple of weeks to distribute sugar and fruit and then leave for 2-3 months after which it will be ready to drink.
Decant to another bottle - I used a nice shaped bourbon bottle I had kept for the purpose.
I made mine in the autumn and started to drink it at Christmas - it came out quite sweet and syrupy - delicious.
