Check out your holiday rules - Don't get caught out
Drinking rules around the world.
Thinking of travelling? Do you know the rules on alcohol? Well here’s a few tips so you don’t get into a sticky mess.
Dubai A Muslim country which is tolerant of alcohol as long as you obey the rules they have set. Alcohol is sold in hotels and bars that have a licence. No alcohol can be found in restaurants so you won’t be able to get a beer or a bottle of wine with your meal. If you want to drink in your own home in Dubai ( if you are lucky enough to have a holiday home there) you will have to obtain a licence to purchase alcohol and then you can buy from places that are authorised to sell alcohol. If you are a born Muslim you will not get a licence to buy alcohol Recently Dubai banned drinking in British pubs and sports bars between 2pm and 6pm. Although tolerant of drinkers and expats & holiday makers drinking they do expect rules to be adhered to and if caught in public drunk or drinking, don’t expect to be let off lightly!
Sharjah Although this country is in the emirates and next door to Dubai it is ruled by a sheik who is less tolerant of alcohol and consequently is bsanned. Be careful because it is easy to roam from one emirati country to another.
Abu Dhabi Another emerati country and described by CNN as the richest country in the world. Abu Dhabi is tolerant of alcohol. Legal age is 21 & they practice zero tolerance of drinking and driving.
Iran A Muslim country which has banned alcohol entirely. Although commonly drunk in homes & a blind eye is turned DO NOT expect to see alcohol on show in shops, restaurants or hotels. If caught with alcohol you will be arrested. It is against against the law and not tolerated.
